Intense Gales Leave Numerous Homes In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents urged to stay indoors as strong winds batter the nation.

Intense winds attaining speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in nearly 90,000 households experiencing outages and compelled authorities to call off in excess of 100 air travel services, according to domestic outlets.

The winds are affecting the whole southern region and southern sections of the North Island, per the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have released uncommon red wind warnings - the highest alert level - in key areas including Wellington and Canterbury.

Locals have been urged to remain inside, avoid travel, and make arrangements for additional power and communication outages.

Broad Damage and Emergency Measures

The power cut appears to be affecting homes predominantly in the South Island, although officials state that energy was being slowly brought back.

Local media have reported that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, while trees and electricity poles have been brought down by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being hit by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a female was blown onto moving cars on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.

Air travel to and from the urban area have been halted due to the weather, while some roads and libraries are not operating.

Meanwhile authorities in Canterbury have declared a state of emergency, to assist emergency management operations.

Work Stoppages Alongside Severe Weather

The powerful gales on Thursday come as tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers take part in what has been described as a "major walkout", requesting improved salaries and workplace environments.

However the intense climate has pressured them to change some of their plans, with several external protests moved indoors or abandoned.

Similar gusts are impacting Australia, ushering in a high-temperature event to the country's outback.

Officials have announced burning restrictions for concern about bushfires.
