The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
