This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The One Piece anime previously took a half-year break that started in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to one episode of the series covering one chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to make up for time.
It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple maximum releasing each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
